Direct from Jerusalem comes one of the most celebrated global music stars, YASMIN LEVY, for her first national tour of Australia, accompanied by a 5 – piece ensemble of musicians playing the Turkish ney, cajon, duduk, bass, clarinet, and guitar.

A captivating live performer, Yasmin Levy revives the endangered music from her Ladino heritage, an ancient form of singing dating back to 15th century Spain noted for its depth of passion, emotion and riveting melodies.

Her third album, ‘Mano Suave’, produced by Lucy Duran and Jerry Boys, was released to rave reviews worldwide in October 2007, and features a remarkable duet with Egyptian chanteuse Natacha Atlas.  A recipient of the Anna Lindh Award for promoting cross-cultural dialogue, Yasmin explains ‘I have come to understand that my role as an artist must be to help contribute in whatever small way I can to avoid Ladino music becoming extinct in the modern world. With this record I have chosen to return home to my ancestral roots and I couldn’t be happier.’

Born with an inheritance of history, music, beauty and talent in Jerusalem in 1975, they say of  Yasmin's remarkable voice ‘once heard, never forgotten’Her Australian debut performance at the 2007 WOMADelaide Festival left her audience breathless, and saw her CDs all fly out of the shop.

Yasmin preserves and revives the most beautiful songs from the Ladino/Judeo-Spanish heritage, mixing it with Andalucian Flamenco, and her own contemporary expression to create an unforgettable musical and cultural experience.

“Levy is one of the finest singers from the Middle East, and deserves global recognition.  She has a gently exquisite and emotive style, and can tackle anything from a traditional Ladino song of a longing for Jerusalem to a Bedouin melody, pained love songs, or her own thoughtful ballads of love and hope.” Robin Denselow, The Guardian (UK), Oct ‘07

Bunnyconnellen has just won eight medals at this year’s prestigious Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.  The medals were awarded against some fierce inter-State competition, and sensationally, Bunnyconnellen swept the board in the Olives and Olive Products Category taking six of the twelve medals awarded, moreover they were the only Queensland grove to win medals in the extra virgin olive oil category.

How to get there :  Leave Brisbane CBD via Ipswich Hwy and follow signs for Toowoomba.  At Blacksoil (BP Servo’s each side of Hwy) follow signs for Esk.  At Esk follow signs for Crow’s Nest and Hampton.  Wind up hill to ‘T’ junction at Hampton.  Turn right onto New England Hwy for Crow’s Nest.  Pass through Crow’s Nest and stay on New England Hwy.  Pass ‘Salt’s Antiques’ on left when leaving Crow’s Nest CBD.  Zero milometer.  At 5.3 km turn left to Haden (see bunch of grapes sign just prior to turn).  Follow single track bitumen for 5 km and turn left into Swain Road.  300 mtrs (pass main entrance) and turn into Bunnyconnellen house driveway.  See ‘mud map’ on web site.  Journey time should be 2 hours 20 minutes with no stops.

SEVILLANAS WORKSHOPS!!

5 x 2hr sessions over 2 weekends in Sept/Oct 2007

Sevillanas are a lively song and dance form in ¾ or 6/8 time, derived from the seguidilla, a Castillan fold dance . They are danced in pairs (or variations on the theme), and are choreographed. They are made up of four short dances, with a melodic theme that is sung or played three times in each dance and ends with a sudden stop as dancers strike a pose before preceding onto the next dance.

In the true sense they are not a flamenco dance but have been embraced and “flamenco-ised” and become extremely popular in flamenco. They are the Andalucian’s and especially Sevilla’s best known and most popular Spanish dance form.

There is a mass of information available on Sevillanas on the internet - just google or go to You tube, but the best way to learn is to dance them over, and over, and over again!

Session 1 (First Sevillana)

Fri  28 Sept, 7 - 9 pm. ADPI Studios, Albion.

Session 2 (Second Sevillana)

Sun 30 Sept, 5-7pm. ADPI Studios, Albion.

Session 3 (Third Sevillana)

Fri 5 Oct, 7 - 9pm. ADPI Studios, Albion.

Session 4 (Fourth Sevillana)

Sat 6 Oct, 4 - 6pm. ADPI Studios, Albion.

Session 5 (Revise all 4 Sevillanas)

The Arrebato Ensemble will be touring their debut album Arrebato
to Sydney 28 August, Brisbane 13 September, Newcastle 20 September, and
Melbourne 28 September.

The debut CD entitled: Arrebato, which will go on national release through Vitamin Records
from 6 August onwards, has already received significant critical acclaim and their performances
have met with rave reviews.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s John Shand awarded Arrebato four and half stars, while Drum
Media’s Fiona Cameron described their performance as having “…lush, layered melodies
with staccato beats and time changes that shifted pace mood and emotion.”
The instrumentation includes flamenco guitar, cello, double bass, saxophones, percussion,
harmonica, mandolin and palmas (hand clapped rhythms).
With considerable musical virtuosity amongst their ranks, the Arrebato Ensemble has
collaborated over three years to make this exquisite recording possible.
Comprised of: Greg Alfonzetti (flamenco guitar), Damian de Boos-Smith (cello, guitars and
mandolin), Dave Ellis (double bass), Lloyd G (percussion) and Andrew Poniris (saxophones and
harmonica), the finished album includes many memorable solos and atmospheric moments.
‘Arrebato’ a rarely used Spanish word meaning ‘a sudden and intensive burst of emotion, a
feeling of fury or ecstasy’, is apt in describing the ensemble’s original music composed by Greg
Alfonzetti and Damien DeBoos-Smith.
