Flamenco Fire

Gypsy Pathways

Playhouse - QPAC
2 - 4 February 2012

4 Shows Only - Tickets on Sale Now!

Vivid ... Seductive...Haunting...

Flamenco Fire will premier its spectacular new production - Gypsy Pathways - with four performances at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre's Playhouse from 2 - 4 February 2012.

Celebrating the epic nature of the great gypsy migration, Gypsy Pathways delves into the rich and diverse cultures that the Romani people brought with them, with their kathak traditions, from India and encountered and integrated with their own, during their travels through Persia (now Iran) and North Africa. Many of these influences were ultimately to come together when they arrived in Spain, arguably adding the most crucial ingredients to what was to become flamenco.

Featuring the stunning talents of special international guests Indian kathak dancer/singer Sulagna Basu, flamenco dancer Francesca 'La Chica', and flamenco percussionist Andrej Vujicic alongside some of Australia's finest flamenco artists, including dancers Simone Pope, Sebastian Sanchez and Natalie Slect, guitarists Kieren Ray and Andrew Veivers, violinist Shenton Gregory, and singer James Paul, Flamenco Fire's Gypsy Pathways distils from eight centuries of tradition a compelling, passionate, and vibrant show that captures all of the excitement and drama of this part of the great Romani story.

The creative vision of Sunshine Coast based Director/Composer and renowned Flamenco guitarist - Andrew Veivers - Gypsy Pathways has been commissioned by Queensland producer Red Chair with the support of Arts Queensland, Brisbane City Council and QPAC. Veivers' compositional skills have been in high demand with recent commissioned compositional credits including 'Al-Andaluz' (Flamenco Fire 2010), a new translation of Garcia Lorca's 'Blood Wedding' (Sydney Theatre Company 2011) , and a major orchestral work for this year's Woodford Folk Festival.

"Gypsy Pathways is the next chapter in the Flamenco story - a story that I have been exploring through the Flamenco Fire company over the last decade. It involves exciting new partnerships with Indian, flamenco and contemporary dancers and musicians, telling the story of the Gypsy migration from India, west into Europe and their eventual settlement and contribution to the development of Flamenco in Andalucia in Spain" says Veivers. "I'm excited about the opportunity to compose and direct with international flamenco artists - flamenco dancer Francesca 'La Chica' and flamenco percussionist Andrej Vujicic - and it is the first time we have collaborated with Indian dancers and musicians for a major theatre work."

From humble beginnings in Brisbane in 1999, Flamenco Fire has grown into one of Queensland's most successful arts exports and Australia's only national flamenco company. Flamenco Fire is a true collaboration of the talents of Australian flamenco artists. Using predominantly original content, it not only showcases the dance form but also the music and songs of contemporary and traditional flamenco.

A long way from the tourist bars of Madrid, flamenco is fast becoming a truly international art form, and like its stable mate ballet, flamenco regularly graces the major concert halls and theatres around the world. This border leaping, class defying art form not only represents the universality of musical communication, it embraces both insider and newcomer alike and gives a voice to all and sundry to cry aloud a passionate OLE." says Veivers

Flamenco Studio Sevillanas Workshops 2011!!

http://flamenco-world.com/magazine/about/sevillana/sevillana.jpgSevillanas – considered the best know folkloric dance of Spain. The Sevillanas is made

up of four short dances to set music. It is one of the few Spanish dances that have a

set length and choreography, which means you can dance it with anyone, anywhere!

Sevillanas is danced within Flamenco and has had a revival since the 1960’s. It is

especially celebrated at the various Ferias around Andalucia following Semana Santa,

the most famous being the Feria de Sevilla. Many Sevillanos can sing a Sevillana,

(there must be thousands of different ones!) and each year around Feria as you wander

through the shops, especially in Sevilla, you’ll hear the latest Sevillana releases (the

chart toppers for that year). They range from over the top but fun (synthesizer, orchestras,

castanets) to stunning flamenco solo guitar interpretations. Away from Feria it’s danced

anywhere there’s a party, you don’t even need music.

Sevillanas is danced within flamenco under many interpretations – as a couple, in groups,

with mantons, with fans, with or without castanets, fast, slow, and in various musical

styles – it’s been interpreted in pretty much every way!

In the workshops we’ll learn the 4 Sevillanas, with a focus on understanding how each of them fit to the music. We’ll dance to various

musical styles of Sevillanas – from traditional to more contemporary styles.

The workshops will incorporate 5 x 2 hr sessions over 2 weekends. Most suitable for students with at least 6 months flamenco dance

experience. However if you have less experience and you’re keen to try, please contact me.

Flamenco Dance Workshops with Sebastian Sanchez 2011!!

http://simonepope.com/Images/seb.jpg

About Sebastian Sanchez.... Sebastian commenced dancing flamenco in 2000 after watching his first teacher Simone Pope perform at a local festival in Brisbane, and was instantly mesmerised. After several years training with Simone attending regular classes at the Flamenco Studio, workshops by visiting international artists, and travelling briefly to Spain to further his knowledge, Sebastian soon became a teacher in the academy where he first began. He also became a performer for a number of dance companies. As a member of Australian dance Companies, ‘Jaleos Flamenco, ‘Flamenco Fire' (where he performed at Brisbane's prestigious concert venue QPAC in their production of “Primavera Mia”) and co producer of the company ‘Dale Caña', Sebastian has performed in various concerts and festivals including the Woodford Folk Festival, The Valley Fiesta, and the Queensland Multicultural Festival .

With a view to progressing his artistic career on a full time basis, and influenced by his Spanish migrant parents, Sebastian travelled to Andalucia where he has trained intensively for approximately 3 years in Jerez and Seville. In doing so, he has continued to progress with international artists such as Rafael Campallo, Manuel Betanzos, Andrés Peña, Pili Ogalla, Juan de los Reyes, and Alejandro Granados to name a few. Consequently Sebastian taught various levels as guest teacher at Casa de Flamenco Academy in Adelaide and the Flamenco Studio in Brisbane and has also taught regular classes, workshops and provided private tuition throughout Europe, including Spain and Russia . Sebastian has also performed several time as an invited artist in Russia at the Moscow Jazz Club and the esteemed Moscow International Performing Arts Centre.

As a teacher, Sebastian is known for his affable personal style, his extensive knowledge of flamenco dance and music theory and ability to bring out the best of his students through discipline in compas, technique, and expression.

Olayo Jimenez was born in Northern Spain into a Gypsy family of flamenco singers, dancers and basket (canasteros) makers. His Grandmother – “La Milia” – was a flamenco singer and friend of the great Carmen Amaya, with whom she shared the stage when together they made their début in Barcelona.  Complimenting an upbringing surrounded by flamenco, Olayo immersed himself in the serious study of the flamenco art form. Focusing on Madrid and Seville, two great centres of flamenco, Olayo studied intensively at Amor de Dios (Madrid) and Foundation Cristina Heeren (Seville) with highly respected singers such as Naranjito de Triana and Jose de la Tomasa.

For many years Olayo’s highly personal vocal style and deep understanding of flamenco have combined to ensure that his talents are constantly in demand. Highlight performances include: The Royal Albert Hall (London), The Conservatorium of Music (Rotterdam, Holland), performances on Dutch television, film scores and acting appearances (El Punto Sobre la I), and many other performances in prestigious concert halls in Holland, Denmark and the United Kingdom. Olayo is currently based in Andalucia and joined the cast of Flamenco Fire in 2008.

FLAMENCO DANCE WORKSHOPS WITH ANGEL MUNOZ!!

cid:image003.jpg@01CC4B77.C7788EA0cid:image004.jpg@01CC4B77.C7788EA0cid:image005.jpg@01CC4B77.C7788EA0

I am pleased to announce for the first time ever in Australia, maestro Ángel Muňoz will be conducting a two day flamenco dance workshop.  Currently on tour with Paco Pena, Ángel has agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to teach us!

About Ángel Muňoz

Following eight years of studies with maestra Inmaculada Luque in his hometown of Córdoba, and as a student of the Dance Conservatory, Ángel became a member of the Ziryab Dance Company, directed by Javier Latorre. He was then a soloist in the choreographic work based on ‘La Fuerza del Destino’ (‘The Power of Destiny’), which went to numerous stages around Europe. He appeared in operas such as ‘La Traviata’ and ‘La del Soto del Parral’, and even on a television series, before obtaining the ‘La Mejorana’ Prize in 1994 in Córdoba's National Flamenco Art Contest.

As a lead figure, he has danced in the company of dancer José Antonio and in that of guitarist Paco Peña, with whom he has travelled to stages all over the world; as well as in the show ‘Universo Flamenco’ (‘Flamenco Universe’), backed by guitarist Mario Cortés.

For years María Pagés has called on Ángel Muñoz as the lead dancer in her company in shows such as ‘La Tirana’, premiered at Seville's Bienal in 1998, and ‘Flamenco Republic’, presented in New York in 2001.

Another of his recent jobs is his role as a bailaor in the show ‘Sueños de ida y vuelta’ by guitarist Víctor Monge ‘Serranito’, where his wife, and on many occasions stage partner, Charo Espino, also dances. Together with her and bailaoras Maribel Espino and Inmaculada Ortega; guitarists Jorge Rodríguez and Manuel Pérez; cantaores Miguel Ortega and José Ángel Carmona; and percussionist Nacho López, Ángel Muñoz has put together his own company which in December 2003 premiered the show ‘Robándole al alma’ in South Africa.

As well as performing extensively on the international circuit, Ángel is a highly respected instructor, having taught very popular workshops at the Festival de Jerez, as well as in London and Europe.

We are very lucky indeed to have him teach us!

“It is impossible to ignore the exquisite, exceptional talent that is Angel Muñoz. Muñoz is totally possessed by flamenco, he inhabits it like a second skin, so that even his most casual gesture, his slightest step is fluid with its spirit”.

Simone Pope is choreographer and principal soloist with Australia's only national Flamenco company Flamenco Fire, performing regularly at QPAC, Woodford Folk Festival, and in extensive tours around Australia. Simone returns annually to study with Spanish maestros in Seville, Jerez and Madrid. She is the director of Brisbane's acclaimed Flamenco Studio conducting 5 levels of flamenco classes weekly. Simone is also director and choreographer of the annual production, Toma Flamenco. Have a look at her website www.simonepope.com

What to wear: Ladies - this is not Tango or Salsa, so don't wear high heels! A closed toe shoe with a solid heel is ideal (court shoe, boot or lady jane). If you don't have a full skirt to wear, then comfortable pants are fine. Gentlemen, no high heels either :-) but a heeled shoe or boot would be perfect!

Flamenco Dance Workshops with Pepa Molina from Madrid!!

Presented by The Flamenco Studio

This will be Pepa's second visit to Brisbane– the last time in 2007, so I'm very pleased that we get to coincide with her this year!!! I recently spent a week with Pepa in Madrid at Amor de Dios were she is now one of the maestros. There she not only runs her own classes, but also teaches the Ciclo Dedicado a la Formacion Completa del Baile Flamenco in association with other great maestras including La Truco, Maria Juncal and Carmela Greco.

About Pepa ….Pepa Molina originally trained with Antonio Vargas and after continuing her studies in Spain, she went on to perform in some of the most renowned National and International music and dance festivals and flamenco tablaos,  including El Café de Chinitas , Corral de la Morería , Corral de la Pacheca , La Villa Rosa , Casa Patas , Las Tablas and Las Carboneras . From there Pepa has been in national and international tours as a soloist in Amargo , Poeta en Nueva York , and Troya siglo XXI with Rafael Amargo and with Paco Peña and the Losadas.

In 2004, she formed her own dance company “Compañía Pepa Molina” and has also performed in companies such as Manolete's dance companies, with Eva “La Yierbabuena” and Manolo Marín as guest choreographers. In Spain, Pepa has taught at Casa Patas Conservatorium, The Antonio Canales School of Dance and the prestigious Amor de Dios. She recently performed in “Flamencos XXIst Century” with Rafaela Carrasco, Manuel Liñan and Marco Flores.

Pepa continues to hone her skills both as a teacher and performer. Her workshops are excellent – she has great energy as a teacher, is extremely attentive and motivating, and is able to impart the whole package – feet and body, compás and intention of a movement - through her more than 15 years of teaching experience. On top of that she has a phenomenal knowledge and understanding of the flamenco artform.

Flamenco Fire - Al-Andaluz - Woodford Folk Festival

Drawing from the rich influences of over five centuries of Music, Dance and Culture, Al-Andaluz is many stories told together, always glancing backwards in time, with a gentle sense of movement through the centuries.

Evocative...Sensual...Timeless....

Tracing the evolution of flamenco from the last Moorish King (1492) to its ‘golden age' in Seville (19th century), Flamenco Fire's newest production, Al-Andaluz celebrates the evocative mix of the sacred and secular music and culture of the Moors (the generic name given to the people of Islamic North Africa), the Sephardic Jews, the Gypsies and the Northern Europeans.

Told through compelling live music, passionate song, and dazzling, vibrant movement, Al - Andaluz captures the exotic clash of cultures that, over the centuries, provided the foundation of the great art of flamenco.

Flamenco Dance Workshops with Sebastian Sanchez!!

http://simonepope.com/Images/seb.jpg

About Sebastian Sanchez.... Sebastian commenced dancing flamenco in 2000 after watching his first teacher Simone Pope perform at a local festival in Brisbane, and was instantly mesmerised. After several years training with Simone attending regular classes at the Flamenco Studio, workshops by visiting international artists, and travelling briefly to Spain to further his knowledge, Sebastian soon became a teacher in the academy where he first began. He also became a performer for a number of dance companies. As a member of Australian dance Companies, ‘Jaleos Flamenco, ‘Flamenco Fire' (where he performed at Brisbane's prestigious concert venue QPAC in their production of “Primavera Mia”) a nd co producer of the company ‘Dale Caña', Sebastian has performed in various concerts and festivals including the Woodford Folk Festival, The Valley Fiesta, and the Queensland Multicultural Festival .

With a view to progressing his artistic career on a full time basis, and influenced by his Spanish migrant parents, Sebastian travelled to Andalucia where he has trained intensively for approximately 3 years in Jerez and Seville .

Flamenco Studio Sevillanas Workshops 2010

   http://simonepope.com/Images/DSC_0005.jpg

Sevillanas .....considered the best know folkloric dance of Spain, the Sevillanas is made up of four short dances to set music. It is one of the few Spanish dances that have a set length and choreography, which means you can dance it with anyone, anywhere! Sevillanas has been embraced by Flamenco and have had a revival since the 1960's. It is especially celebrated at the various   Ferias   around Andalucia following   Semana Santa , the most famous being the Feria de Sevilla . Many Sevillanos can sing a Sevillana, (there must be thousands of different ones!) and each year around Feria as you wander through the shops, especially in Sevilla, you'll hear the latest Sevillana releases (the chart toppers for that year). They range from over the top but fun (synthesizer, orchestras, castanets) to stunning flamenco solo guitar interpretations. Away from Feria it's danced anywhere there's a party, you don't even need music.

Sevillanas is danced within flamenco under many interpretations - as a couple, in groups, with mantons, with fans, with or without castanets, fast, slow, and in various musical styles - it's been interpreted in pretty much every way! But it always returns to the same form and is nearly always danceable.

In the workshops we'll learn the traditional steps of the Sevillanas and how they go with the music, and we'll dance to various musical styles - mostly traditional but some less traditional styles.

The workshops will incorporate 5 x 2 hr sessions over 2 weekends .   Most suitable for students with at least 6 months flamenco dance experience.   However if have less experience and you're keen to try, please contact me.

When:

Session 1   Fri 1 Oct 7-9pm (first Sevillanas)

Session 2   Sat 2 Oct 3-5pm (second Sevillanas)

Session 3   Sun 3 Oct 3-5pm (third Sevillanas)

Session 4   Sat 9 Oct 3-5pm (fourth Sevillanas)

Session 5   Sun 10 Oct 3-5pm (revise all 4 dances - and refresher for those who've learnt them before!)

Where: ADPI Studios, 31-33 Collingwood St, Albion

Cost:

Full course (10hrs) $140

Per session (2 hrs)  $30

OCTOBER 2009

The Saruzu Quartet on Tour

The Saruzu Quartet - "A fiery flamenco-tango-jazz ensemble, The Saruzu Quartet's interpretation of the rich harmonies of Argentine tango, the wild improvisations of gypsy jazz and the fire and grace of flamenco, is exhilarating.  Evocative of a 1920's Paris cafe scene filtered through an edgy and contemporary sensibility, The Saruzu Quartet is a celebration of the musical passions of its members - renowned violinist Luke Moller, sensual flamenco dancer & fiery percussionist Simone Pope, ferociously cool jazz bass player Andrew Shaw and laid back guitar virtuoso Andrew Veivers.  The Saruzu Quartet's second self-produced recording - Segundo - "slinks onto your stereo, impeccably clad and very well heeled, demanding your head twist twice to take in its smooth delivery. Special guest vocalist Kacey Patrick (stringmansassy) lends her angelic tones to a mesmerising remake of the Duke Ellington tune 'Caravan' and the hypnotic 'Historia de un Amor'. Inspired and exciting."

Barbara Luna, Amanece Tour Australia 2009 - supported by

The Saruzu Quartet @ The Tivoli Theatre

Having captivated audiences with her passionate music at Womadelaide in 2001, Barbara Luna returns to Australia with her Amanece Tour celebrating the release of her new album Ruta Tres.

Barbara is one of Argentina's great talents, she is a gifted guitarist, songwriter and dynamic performer with a distinctive warm voice. Her music is Latin/South American in global terms, however traverses typical Argentine syncopations and Creole grooves, with hints of Spanish and West African Rumbas. Melodic, catchy and timeless, her compositions are rich, varied, bold and seductive. Luna's entrancing live performances showcase the diversity and the beauty of her country, with elements of tango, Afro-Cuban son bolero, Chacarera (Latin Indian), Huayno (Gaucho cowboys) and other folk influences from the diverse provinces.

She performs with an all-star, all-Argentine line-up. Barbara and her band will tour nationally in June this year starting at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (5-7th June) and then onto Melbourne (9th June), Brisbane (11th June) and Sydney (13th - 15th June). The Brisbane performance will be supported by The Saruzu Quartet

Performances and ticket bookings go to http://www.cre8ion.com.au/BarbaraLuna.php

Barbara Luna Amanece Tour

Direct from Jerusalem comes one of the most celebrated global music stars, YASMIN LEVY, for her first national tour of Australia, accompanied by a 5 – piece ensemble of musicians playing the Turkish ney, cajon, duduk, bass, clarinet, and guitar.

A captivating live performer, Yasmin Levy revives the endangered music from her Ladino heritage, an ancient form of singing dating back to 15th century Spain noted for its depth of passion, emotion and riveting melodies.

Her third album, ‘Mano Suave’, produced by Lucy Duran and Jerry Boys, was released to rave reviews worldwide in October 2007, and features a remarkable duet with Egyptian chanteuse Natacha Atlas.  A recipient of the Anna Lindh Award for promoting cross-cultural dialogue, Yasmin explains ‘I have come to understand that my role as an artist must be to help contribute in whatever small way I can to avoid Ladino music becoming extinct in the modern world. With this record I have chosen to return home to my ancestral roots and I couldn’t be happier.’

Born with an inheritance of history, music, beauty and talent in Jerusalem in 1975, they say of  Yasmin's remarkable voice ‘once heard, never forgotten’Her Australian debut performance at the 2007 WOMADelaide Festival left her audience breathless, and saw her CDs all fly out of the shop.

Yasmin preserves and revives the most beautiful songs from the Ladino/Judeo-Spanish heritage, mixing it with Andalucian Flamenco, and her own contemporary expression to create an unforgettable musical and cultural experience.

“Levy is one of the finest singers from the Middle East, and deserves global recognition.  She has a gently exquisite and emotive style, and can tackle anything from a traditional Ladino song of a longing for Jerusalem to a Bedouin melody, pained love songs, or her own thoughtful ballads of love and hope.” Robin Denselow, The Guardian (UK), Oct ‘07
